Thoughts Written by Mushirul Hasan, Memories of a Fragmented Nation, is written 50 years after India's Independence. In this article featured in "Economics and Political Weekly", he explains how he has seen how religion takes place over everything. His main source for this argument is Partition. Neighbors who considered each other family were turned against each other because of the difference in faiths. This goes to show that the two nation theory was not as beneficial as Jinnah predicted because the separation of India and Pakistan was the reason for an eruption in riots, rapes, and murders. What Jinnah considered to be the main form of nationality for Muslims, turned out to be the propelling factor of the ethnic cleansing that occurred as independence was granted. An interesting fact was that Nehru believed that Pakistan would eventually come back to India, therefore disproving the two nation theory. |

Further complications...
- To this day, the region of Kashmir is a major source of political conflict for India and Pakistan. They both want control of the region and have been fighting ever since Radcliffe created the partition. Click the link to find out more!
- Also, there is speculation about where the Bihari People belong. They are also referred to as the "Stranded Pakistanis" because they currently live in Bangladesh, which used to be East Pakistan. After it became an individual country, the Indian Muslims living there were not accepted by the Bangladeshi government nor West Pakistan (now just Pakistan) because they are a large group of people who neither country can provide for. They still live in refugee camps and are fighting to become citizens. Click here to learn more!
